Of All the Things Small Town Life Gives Us, the Go-Ahead to Forget About Home Security Isn’t One of Them

Posted in Home Improvement on 16.01.12

Those of us who live in small towns sometimes take for granted the comforts such a setting provides.  We sometimes fail to really appreciate the sense of community and the presence of tranquility by which we are surrounded.  We forget that in many parts of the country and the world, sending children to play outside with minimal supervision, knowing the name of the mailman and trusting neighbors to watch over empty houses is unheard of.  The small town way of life becomes something we think of as the universal way of life, forgetting how truly lucky we are.

That said, while small towns are often more tranquil and familiar than larger cities, they are by no means perfect.  Crime and aggression is not limited to city streets and can be found anywhere, even in the seemingly sleepiest towns in America.

The area in which we may tend to be most lax when it comes to safety in a small town is that of home security.  We may be more prone to leave our doors unlocked and our windows open.  A home security system or home alarm may feel like an unnecessary pricey investment.  However, this is not the case.  Safety and security in the home is as important an issue in a small town as it is in a suburb or city.  Take these steps to make sure that your home is safe, and maintain that calm life you love about living in your small town:

1.  Check Your Habits

You have probably had several talks with your kids about their bad habits - not picking up after themselves, forgetting to turn the lights off when they leave a room, and avoiding eating their vegetables at dinner time.  Have you ever thought about some bad habits of your own?  What about those bad habits that apply to the security of your home?  If you forget to lock your doors when leaving your house or when going to sleep at night, find a way to remember.  If you are inclined to open the door without checking to see who awaits at your door first, don´t.  Write yourself a note, set yourself an alarm - do whatever it takes to make a change.

2.  Make an Investment

There is no need to go overboard and spend thousands of dollars on the most elaborate home security system you can find, but making an investment in a few security tools and pieces of equipment is not a bad idea.  Consult prices of simple home alarm systems and consider installation.  Repair locks on doors and windows, put in screens and install motion sensory lights.

3.  Be Aware

Though seemingly simple, this tip may be the most important of all.  Those of us who live in a small town are often apt to push the issue of home security to the very back of our minds.  This lack of awareness renders us less likely to notice certain warning signs when it comes to questionable new neighbors or strange lurking characters.  It is important to be conscious of the question of home security at all times.
