Knowing When It’s Time to Replace Your Home Security System

Posted in Home Improvement on 19.01.12

'Out with the old and in with the new.'  The idea of the saying is simple and clear-cut.  Nevertheless, the reality to which it applies is not always so cut and dried.   At one point or another, we have all been guilty of drinking the milk a few days after the expiration date, spending a few days in the dark before buying a new light bulb for the bathroom or squeezing into those old jeans even though we have to lay down to do so.  Getting rid of things and replacing them can be a tough decision.  A question of economy, attachment and stubbornness, we're bound to think twice before making a change.

This is especially true when it comes to more expensive items, including cars, electro domestics, and even home security.  While we may have at one point installed expensive, state-of-the-art security systems and alarms, over time, these things begin to break down.  Regardless of how sound they are, they will not hold up forever.  It is vital to know when to replace these systems, for when it comes to safety and security in the home, there's no taking chances.

How can you tell when it's time to replace your current home security system?  Deciding may not be as easy as it looks.

If you have a home alarm system, a good place to start may be to take a look at your warranty or call your home security system provider.  Request a general revision and check-up of the system.  While your at home tests (turning the system on and then pretending to break in to see if the alarm is activated) may be quite elaborate and sound, an expert revision may leave you a little bit more secure.  A professional will be able to make necessary repairs if possible, and if not, he or she will be able to advise you to go ahead and replace the entire system.

After taking care of your home alarm, think about other home security mechanisms you have in place and their functionality.  Check locks on doors and windows, and have a locksmith replace anything to easy to break.  Hire a handyman and have him fix up any exposed wires or shoddy floorboards, and replace any old electro domestics that could be potentially dangerous.  Make sure that the motion lights you installed work, and if they don't, get new ones.  Replace gate locks and repair fences, and do a little research about what new home safety and security systems are on the market.

There's no need to go overboard and replace every home security and safety mechanism you have in place in your home.  It is a good idea, however, to carry out a bi-annual revision of your systems and apparatuses to make sure that all is in working order.  If you can fix it, fix it.  If you can't, throw it out and get something new.  Squeezing into jeans that have been too small for you since high school is only embarrassing.  Hoping no intruder will ever be lucky enough to figure out that the lock on your back door is broken is dangerous.  Know the difference.
